What Is Ramune? Japan's Famous Marble Soda, Explained

By CRUNCH STASH  •   2 minute read

Hata Ramune original Japanese marble soda bottle

Walk past any Japanese festival stall — or scroll any Japanese snack haul video — and you'll spot it: a bulbous glass bottle with a marble rattling inside. That's ramune (ラムネ), Japan's most iconic soft drink, and one of the most-asked-about products in our store. Here's everything you've ever wanted to know.

A soda with 140 years of history

Ramune arrived in Japan in the 1880s, its name a Japanese take on the English word "lemonade". It's been a summer-festival staple ever since — the taste of matsuri fireworks, yukata and childhood for generations of Japanese people.

Why is there a marble in the bottle?

The classic ramune bottle is a Codd-neck bottle: instead of a cap, it's sealed by a glass marble held in place by the pressure of the carbonation itself. To open it, you push the marble down with the plunger supplied — pop! — and the marble drops into a chamber in the neck, rattling cheerfully as you drink. It's fizzy engineering from the 1870s that Japan simply never stopped loving.

What does ramune taste like?

Original ramune is light, citrusy and gently sweet — somewhere between lemonade and bubblegum soda. But the fun is in the flavours: melon, strawberry, lychee, yuzu, grape, watermelon, pineapple and more, each as colourful as the last.

Ramune in Australia

At CRUNCH STASH we stock the beloved Hata ramune range in classic 200ml bottles — original, melon, strawberry, lychee, yuzu, pineapple, blueberry, orange, watermelon and seasonal editions like white peach — plus Sangaria ramune-flavour sodas in easy 500ml PET bottles if you'd rather skip the marble wrestling. Browse them all in our Japanese soft drinks collection, shipped Australia-wide from our Aussie warehouse.

Three ramune tips

Chill it well before opening — a warm ramune is an over-fizzy ramune. Press the marble down firmly and confidently in one push. And keep the bottle: they're beautiful, reusable and very collectable.
